It is also rooted in the philosophy, logic, sensibility and habits of a civilization entirely foreign to our own. Chinese medicine considers certain aspects of the human body and personality that are not significant to Western medicine, and vice versa.

However the difference between the two medicines is much greater. Western medicine is concerned with isolable disease categories, and it refers to disease as circumscribed entity. The western physician starts with a symptom and then searches for the precise cause. The disease can affect various parts of the body and yet it is considered as a relatively well-defined and self-contained phenomenon. Chinese physician, instead, focuses on the complete physiological and psychological aspects that concern an individual.

The question of cause and effect is always secondary; more important is the relation between symptoms and other signs. The aim of this therapy is to restore harmony to the individual. The patterns of disharmony are similar to what the West calls diseases, but they differ from each other because they cannot be isolated from the patient in which they occur. The Chinese method is based on the idea that no single part can be understood except in its relation to the whole.

A symptom is not traced back to a cause but is looked as a part of a totality. They do work together. Moreover a growing trend toward adopting the best elements of both traditions and combining them can be seen. We believe that this synthesis is bound to continue.

It is actually an undeniable fact that suggestion has an influence on therapies; nevertheless experiments on animals, which exclude any psychological factors, confirm that acupuncture triggers physiological and chemical reactions in the NERVOUS SYSTEM. It is a therapeutic system which has been developed over two millennia. These acupuncture points were grouped together into structures that are linked according to a high systematic framework based on a complex physiological theory. It is certain that needles act stimulating nerve endings which are usually found in the depth of our bodies. According to an ancient tradition, the main elements of Chinese medicine originated in different regions.

Depending on the different standards of living of various municipalities and regions, a variety of therapeutic techniques were proven to be effective. The impact, for instance, of endemic diseases change according to environmental contexts. As a result, Chinese doctors created differentiate treatments. Yin-Yang theory is based on the philosophical construct of two polar complements which are called Yin and Yang.

They are convenient labels used to describes how things function in relation to each other and to the universe. They are used to explain the continuous process of natural change. In this system of thought, no entity can ever be isolated from its relationship to other entities, there are no absolutes. Yin and Yang must contain within themselves the possibility of opposition and change. All thing are seen as a part of a whole. Yin means the shady side of a slope and it is associated with cold, passivity, decrease, darkness and interiority. Yang means the sunny side of the slope and it is associated with heat, activity, increase, light and exteriority.

All things have two aspects: time can be divided into night and day, species into male and female, temperature into hot and cold, and so on. These qualities are opposite, yet they describe relative aspects of the same phenomena. In terms of the body, the front is considered Yin and the back Yang; the outer parts of the body are more Yang that the inner organs. This means that such logic allows further division within aspects ad infinitum. For example, temperature can be divided into icy cold and moderately cold as well.

Although Yin and Yang can be distinguish, they cannot be separated. They depend on each other as well as they define each other. For instance, one cannot speak of temperatures apart from cold and heat. Passivity and aggression can be measured only in comparison with each other. Therefore, if Yin is excessive, then Yang will be too weak; if it is too cold, then there is not enough heat, and vice versa. This means that Yin and Yang control each other.

However Yin and Yang also transform into each other. There are two types of transformations: changes that occur harmoniously, in the natural course of the event, and changes that occur suddenly.

A sudden transformation is characteristic of an extremely imbalanced situation. Yin and Yang are always transforming into each other and this transformation is the source of all change. In the body, transformation can be illustrated by the manner in which inhalation is followed by exhalation. A deficiency of one aspect implies an excess of the other. Harmony means that the proportions of Yin and Yang are relatively balanced.

It produces steroid hormones which regulate carbohydrate and fat metabolism. Within the adrenal cortex there are three zones known as the outer, the middle and the inner zone. The adrenal cortex is devoted to the synthesis of corticosteroid hormones from cholesterol.
